Urwahn bikes / making of Stadtfuchs

We are a young start-up which is developing innovative bicycles in the segment of urban mobility. From the user oriented requierements we created an innovative URWAHN bike, which is engineered for the commuters in search of design, flexibility and performance. By creating this bike we have dissociated ourselves to the traditional construction method and combine new manufacturing processes with quality based materials. In this kind of way we have developed a special frame by reducing the design to the max. As a result of the design process we got a…

The Making of “Schwarzes Gold”

One material, one form – one story. To me, a product should not attract attention through overloaded design. Instead, it’s about the thought – the idea – coupled with intelligent design, which helps bring the product into existence. The product’s final design should be about elaborating things more deeply and understanding the world around us better. In short, it’s about designing a better future. An example of this is the product development of “Schwarzes Gold:” “Schwarzes Gold” does not begin with its material nor end with its form. The lamp…

Bronze casting-lost wax technique

A short animation made for the “Hadrian” Exhibition in the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, December 2015. The film shows the bronze casting process in an artistic yet simple method, a combination of stop motion and 2D animation. The preparation process included a research and a constant dialogue with the curator and the restoration department of the museum as well as a visit in a bronze casting workshop. The head used in the film was a plaster replica of the original Hadrian’s bronze statue found in Tel-Shalem, Israel, 117-138 CE.

Discarded Wood-Shavings chair

“It’s no surprise to learn that hardwood furniture factories aren’t the most sustainable of operations. But it is a shock to hear just how wasteful. According to two students at London’s Royal College of Art, as much as 80% of the timber used in the average factory ends up in the trash, in the form of wood chips and shavings. So for every chair produced, nearly the same amount of wood ends up discarded. Marjan van Aubel and Jamie Shaw see no reason for the waste. As part of a group…

Casting unpredictability

Castable and malleable materials (e.g. concrete, plaster, rockite and etc..) deserve a renewed consideration in architectural design due to their connection historically to the craftsman role and embodiment of tacit knowledge that extends beyond what is explicitly gained to contemporary digital fabrication and design. Castable material in the contemporary discourse of architecture has faded mainly in response to two conditions, one to the rise of digital fabrication, the usability and feasibility of standardized sheet material such as plywood boards. Second is the incapacity for architecture to engage inexact materials to…

Aeron Chair by Herman Miller

“The process is as important as the results: It’s the individual employees on the line that are suggesting these improvements. At Herman Miller, they average 1,200 “plan-do-check acts”–that is, little proposed changes to the assembly process–ever year. “The biggest thing is to empower people to change the work in ways that matter to them,” says Eric VanDam, Herman Miller’s director of operations in seating” from fast co design: http://www.fastcodesign.com/1669397/an-american-made-miracle-how-an-aeron-chair-gets-built-every-17-seconds picture and video by Drew Anthony Smith/Fast Company
